Is an electric composter right for you?

Is an electric composter right for you?

Julie

If you're struggling to fit a new food waste bin into your life, you're not alone.

New regulations mean food waste must be separated from other waste for collection by the council; in most cases this means having a kitchen food waste bin which is emptied into a larger bin outside.

There are many smart-looking caddies on the market, but if you hanker after a different  option for your kitchen we've found the ideal alternative.

We've spent two months testing the Reencle Prime electric food waste composter. This is the new kid on the kitchen block - a piece of equipment about the size of a microwave or small bin that sits on a worktop or on the floor. All food waste goes in – except bones – and at the press of a button, the waste gets dried and ground into a soil amendment.

The transformed contents are mixed with soil for two weeks and can then be planted into.

The Reencle Prime food waste composter

Designed in South Korea, where residents pay by weight to dispose of food waste, the Reencle uses patented microorganisms to break waste down naturally, turning it into compost in super-quick time.

The unit creates the ideal environment for the microorganisms thanks to:

·     *  Internal temperature regulation

·       * A continuous stirring rod that helps to break down food waste

Benefits include:

·       * No smell, thanks to a charcoal filter which can be removed and replaced.

·       * Noiseless

·       * The lid can be set to open as you approach, making disposal easier.

Estimated running costs are 20p – 38p per day.

Who are electric composters good for?

Our verdict is that they would be ideal if you:

·      *  Live in an apartment

·       * Have a sun-trap kitchen where food waste might smell and attract flies

·       * Want to manage your food waste quickly yourself

·       * Like the idea of composting but don’t want to stir compost

·     *  Don’t want to deal with an external food waste caddy
